Favourites: Banff Gondola as your Windows Live Wallpaper

Microsoft Windows used to have a feature called Live Wallpaper that let you use a website as your windows desktop, so if there was somewhere you longed to be, or wished your office window looked out onto, you could at least create that view on your Windows desktop wallpaper. With that feature now long gone, I created Be There to try and achieve something similar for my favourite places. You can now see some of those favourites. But I’ve been asking myself, “why are all my favourites in France?”. Well, no longer – let’s try and redress the balance!

Although my favourite wallpaper cams are mostly in France, a few are from further afield. I use this one, the Banff Gondola in Alberta, Canada, fairly regularly on my desktop.

What’s so great about the Banff Gondola as a live wallpaper for Windows?

In the deepest part of winter, scenes from Europe can make a bit of a miserably dark desktop wallpaper in the late afternoon and early evening. Sure, there are some amazing cams that do an awesome job of capturing night scenes, but if I’m dreaming of snow, sometimes it’s nice to dream of, you know, daylight at the same time. The Banff Gondola gives me a little bit of desktop daylight well into the night here in Europe. I like to tweak the view to show the Canadian flag, Sanson’s Peak and Mount Norquay, and a few humans popping in and out of sight. And with some spectacular mountains, a good dose of sunshine and at least a hint of snow all year round, what’s not to like?
