Favourites: Webcam wallpaper for Windows – Cauterets

This town square scene in Cauterets in the French Pyrenees makes a fabulous webcam wallpaper for Windows, particularly on a laptop or single-monitor system.

Why do I keep coming back to this cam?

Is this the most eye-blasting mountainscape that you might want as a Windows wallpaper? No. But Cauterets has a more subtle charm than most ski towns, and this part of the French Pyrenees used to be a haunt of mine from time to time. I often wish I could, er, be there. It’s been a spa since Roman times, but the look and feel of much the town is from the 1800s. The camera catches some of this, but you’ll also see the mountains, market stands, a fountain, and people wandering through the square. The elegant former casino is now a cinema.

I’ve snowboarded at Cauterets a few times and always had fun – the terrain is basically a single Cirque, with a variety of routes down from the ridge run (“Crêtes”). The base area of the Cirque is accessed via a gondola from the town; several chairs take you to increasingly high points on the Crêtes ridge run, and you can drop off at multiple points on the way down, or just follow the ridge. If you have the chance to visit with a car, it’s an essential stop that’s not too far from several other n’Py resorts like Grand Tourmalet (Barèges / La Mongie) and Luz Ardiden.
